BROCHURE & POSTER DESIGN | ANNUAL REPORT AND OTHER DESIGN |
Here's a small selection of the work I've done on a freelance basis.

Logo, folder and brochure - a design project for a Cape Town real estate agent.

Poster design proposals for a US Army tank training centre. This was done through a military supplier
who outsourced the work to freelance graphic designers.

If my work is somewhat different from that of other graphic designers, it is because I've been drawing funny little pictures since an early age. Few designers can actually draw - a pity for them, because it's a valuable and always-interesting skill. The whole world loves someone who can draw, as one of my college lecturers said. The famous graphic designer Neville Brody said something to the effect that design is based on drawing skills. Design is an arty thing, with technical and commercial bits thrown in. My first job was as an assistant story board artist at J Walter Thompson in Johannesburg. For several years, almost all I did was put my head down and concentrate hard on drawing pictures, and trying to improve the quality of my line. I often did this for 12 hours a day or more, under lots of pressure. I really just had to develop to improve my salary, and I like to think that my work has retained a certain illustrative quality as a result.
I'm happy to be a freelancer now, especially with the way I work. My website appears on Google, Yahoo and Bing and gets me clients without me having to go out and find them. I still find this a constant source of amazement. I work on a laptop from anywhere, and have done quite a bit of travelling while working. I've made it as far as Malawi, an adventurous experience. Drawing cartoons for a client in Johannesburg while sitting on the beach of Lake Malawi had a real Wild Blue Yonder feel to it. It made me feel that life is really good! Maybe the work benefited as a result (I think so anyway!). Perhaps I'll do more travelling in the future. At any rate the freedom of being able to do so, versus being chained to a desk in an office with a boss, and with colleagues who I often couldn't stand, while living an essentially boring life, is very cool. I am so glad that I've escaped the office and the Office Monster, that thing that lives in the hearts of tie-wearers (thanks, Google!). That's enough about me - enjoy the rest of my portfolio!
