Drawing was my main interest as a kid. I tried studying Civil Engineering when I left school, but maths and science aren't my thing. So I studied graphics instead, and got my first job in ad agencies as an assistant illustrator and storyboard artist at J Walter Thompson. I moved up to become an Art Director a few years later, and then Creative Director. However, I still did all my own visuals and storyboards. I'm glad I did - drawing's the basis of graphic design, film and typography, and thus of a lot of advertising.
There's so few Art Directors or graphic designers who know anything about art. They seem to get caught up in the glitz of their titles and tend to look down upon drawing skills. It makes me think they don't really know what their jobs are. Today I still draw almost every day - although it's mostly done digitally these days. I try to include illustration in my work as much as possible. I hope it lends what I'm doing a distinctive air, and helps my clients' products stand out from the general overuse of photography, and of typography generated by computer without any thought to its meaning or origin. I hope you like the resulting portfolio.
I especially like cartoons. They add fun to life. They were drawn for your amusement - hope you enjoy them!
