Fun, fun, fun! That's what it''s all about. Another freelance web design for a youth hostel. This hostel is on SA's Wild Coast. As is usual with the youth travel market, the emphasis is on having a good time. Day trips and adventure activities play a big part of the hostel's business. I had to get this across with graphics, as well as words.

The job included a lot of copy writing. A lot of people see the site after seeing ads in tour guides. Search engines are important though. Keyword research played a big role in optimising the site. It led to the site getting 5 times more visitors than the previous design. This has a big effect in an industry which relies on the internet. Almost all visitors look on the web when deciding where to stay. Brochure sites such as this play an important part.

People had to want to stay there after seeing the site. Fun is the main thing. But the guests also want to learn about SA. A quick audio course in the local language is part of the site. Other extras included maps and brochure.

I've worked mostly with clients from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. But I've done a lot of work through the Internet for clients from all over South Africa. And all over the world too, particularly the USA. I've found that working through email works well. There's less chance of a misunderstanding. Also, it feels good to be in touch with the latest ways of doing things.

Graphic artists don't usually know how to do their own Search Engine Optimisation. They're usually creative thinkers, designers, cartoonists and illustrators. They're into creative ideas and marketing concepts and being talented people. But, due to my backround in advertising agencies, and because I had to get customers somehow, I'm a graphic designer who also knows about online marketing. For instance, this text includes researched keywords such as photo retouching and restoration, and freelancer portfolios. You may have found my portfolio by typing one or more of these words into a search engine. Other keywords include web designers and art directors. Advertising agencies and design companies in South Africa in particular, and the world in general, seem not to put too much emphasis on their websites. Even, paradoxically, website design companies.

However, I think it's something new and important in the world of advertising, especially in today's economy. How are companies going to cut costs, while still keeping high standards? Working online is a solution. It enables them to work with an experienced designer or art director, giving much the same results as expensive ad agencies and design studios. The person who's doing the actual work is the same, but there aren't nearly as many overheads. Such as support staff salaries. I'm one of those who rely on their website's rankings, and it works. It was for The Sharks team, and was one of the first sports marketing campaigns in the country. AGENCY A full page press ad to announce the season's games.
